Knoxville Government

The city of Knoxville and Knox County have separate governing bodies. Both are governed by a mayor.

City of Knoxville:
The City of Knoxville has over thirty boards, commissions, and committees that provide Public input and participation for different City agencies and services. The legislative body for the City of Knoxville is City Council. The current mayor for the City of Knoxville is Bill Haslam. [Web Site]

Knox County Government:
The Knox County Commission is the legislative body of Knox County. Nineteen commissioners are elected in even-numbered non-presidential election years to four-year terms from nine districts: two commissioners are elected from each of districts 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8 and 9 and three commissioners from district 5. Districts must conform to the one-person, one-vote rule and district lines are changed each ten years following the federal census. Mike Ragsdale is the current County Mayor. [Web Site]

Town of Farragut:
The Town of Farragut was incorporated on January 16, 1980, with the first Board of Mayor and Aldermen elected on April 1, 1980. Farragut maintains controls on zoning, building codes and sign displays plus major improvements to roads and a sincere commitment to developing parks, green space, pedestrian links and leisure opportunities. The Town is named after Admiral David Glasgow Farragut, the first Admiral of the United States of America Navy. [Web Site]

Metropolitan Planning Commission:
The Metropolitan Planning Commission (MPC) was established in 1956 by Knoxville and Knox County as the agency responsible for comprehensive county-wide planning and administration of zoning and land subdivision regulations and remains so today, except for the town of Farragut. Funding for MPC activities comes primarily from city and county appropriations and from federal grants for specific studies.
